    Lecture: Science, Citizenship and the Public Value of the University

    As many commentators have observed, the push to innovation is a major theme of modern life. In this changing context, questions of science, citizenship and the role of knowledge institutions seem more important than ever. Specifically, how can universities make a larger democratic contribution to exploring socio-technical futures? What would it mean to put “public value” at the core of European universities? And what possibilities are there for enhanced citizen engagement within these processes of innovation and change?

    Following the presentation by Professor Alan Irwin, there will be time for audience dialogue, discussion and critical reflection on the questions raised.

    More and more, research is supposed to involve citizens. The idea is that researchers should not simply​ pursue their own interests, but should work for society. This includes involving citizens in science, from engaging them in the research process to presenting research results in an accessible and useful way.
